Australia and Indonesia: Strengthening Ties Through Critical Mineral Cooperation
Newly re-elected Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is moving quickly, with his first overseas visit scheduled for Indonesia this May—just one day after swearing in his new cabinet. While the agenda is expected to be broad, critical minerals are likely to feature prominently for the Indonesian side.
In a recent call with President Prabowo Subianto, Albanese reaffirmed the strength of bilateral ties, describing the relationship as “an unbreakable bond.” He also told Australian media, “We have no more important relationship than Indonesia, just to our north.”
Critical minerals cooperation is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of Indonesia’s economic vision for deeper engagement with Australia.
